The Battle of the Makeup Setting Sprays

(left to right) MAC Prep & Prime Fix +, Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Water, Revolution Pro Fix.

I am a lover of makeup setting sprays. My collection of setting sprays continues to grow however I thought it would make a great post to provide a makeup setting spray for every budget. Whilst each of these products vary and differ, they all serve the same style of purpose.

Makeup Revolution are a growing London based makeup brand that provide cruelty free products at affordable prices. This makeup setting spray is only £5 and can be purchased via the Makeup Revolution website which is linked below or in Superdrug. Revolution claim their formula will protect your makeup against heat and humidity, cold, and windy conditions, and however your skin reacts this will help your make stay perfect for up to 8 hours. I like to apply this spray after I have finished my makeup to ensure it settles into place. This setting spray is exceptionally affordable and has 100ml of product and is amazing for anyone who doesn't want to spend over £20 on some 'fancy water'. If you are on a budget this is a great buy to test out. The only criticism I have is that the spray bottle itself feels quite cheap and the nozzle where the product itself disperses from is not great in comparison to higher end brands. The water doesn't spray evenly so it lands in patches on your face. I also didn't particularly like the scent however you get used to it after a couple of uses.

I have to admit I have repurchased MAC Prep and Prime Fix + spray at least 5 times over the last 2 years. This isn't typically a setting spray however I use it to prime my face and then set it at the end of my makeup application. This setting spray is a lightweight, mineral rich finishing mist that refreshes the skin and finishes makeup. Fix + helps create an even surface for a smooth makeup application. I love using this after my makeup because it settles any powders sitting on the skin making the skin slightly more dewy looking. Again, my only criticism is the fact that the nozzle from where it disperses isn't great, whilst it is better than the Makeup Revolution Pro Fix it still disperses the product in patches. This product retails for £17 and is linked below.

The final setting spray is one of my more recent purchases which I bought in Sephora during my time in the states. The Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Water blew up in the beauty community and I was so torn between buying it or continuing with my Fix +. On the last day I decided to bite the bullet and I purchased it for $32 which is around £20. I have trialled this spray every day for the last two weeks and I have to admit - I love it. I prefer using this spray before applying any makeup rather than as a finishing spray. The spray disperses very finely and evenly from the nozzle which I love. The spray itself is silicone, alcohol and oil free which leaves the skin radiant and hydrated. You can use this spray in multiple ways, as a primer before makeup, as a setting spray or as a refresh for through out the day. The product contains 116ml. My main question I had was does it prolong the longevity of my makeup? If I'm honest I really enjoyed using this spray and I didn't realise how much I loved it until I stopped using it. I realised that using this as a primer really makes my makeup stay in place all day. I also think this product is less harsh on the skin and because it is silicone free it does not clog your pores as much. I cannot fault this and I personally do not believe that this product is just 'fancy water'. You can purchase the primer water in the link below.

Overall, I think if you have the budget to spend a little more on a priming or setting spray then you should, however there are many budget options in the drugstore that can work just as well.

Let me know if you have tried any other makeup setting sprays in the comments section.
