LIFE OF A BLOGGER | PR & BLOGGING

Hey Hey Hey, how you all doing?? I thought I would do a more serious post today and sit behind my laptop and just type about PR & Blogging. I was thinking I would start a little series captioned 'Life of a Blogger' so that you can get more of an insight. Let me know your thoughts?

As the majority of you will know I have been blogging consistently since December 2014, some of you whom have been here since the start and for some of you this might be the first post you are reading.. I would say I became a 'blogger' at the start of April, my viewer base increased and I began working with companies! I think everyone has their own definition for what a blog is! For me, blogging is a hobby. I love photographing and editing and reviewing new launches! I love styling and creating new looks which are personal to my style. Others may regard bloggers as promoters, which I agree with too! Others would regard blogging as a job, which I too, agree with.

BLOGGING IS TIME CONSUMING
Blogging IS a full time job, there is no doubt about that. From the minute I wake up, to the minute I shut my eyes I am planning and scheduling new posts, writing new posts, photographing, responding to emails, updating my social media and organising my blog. It interferes with my relationships as  I have become so busy. The thing is, on top of my blog, I have a full time law degree at university and I work part time in retail. People really do underestimate how much time and effort it takes to have a full time hobby!

JEALOUSY
Another thing I have learned from being a blogger is the jealous people which comes with it. Some people deal with it in a more indirect way which I find immature but hey ho, I guess what Suzy says about Sally, says more about Suzy than it does about Sally!! I think blogging has shown me deep down who my true friends are. Many people including my boyfriend, friends and manager have told me to cut these people out my life because if they cannot be happy for me when I am successful then I need to block them out my life. I have been a very negative person regarding myself at times, so to ensure I stay positive and happy I need to have happy people surrounding me not people who are jealous and tearing me down.

Another thing that is hard about blogging is that people who used to not get on with you want you to promote them because you are now successful. I find it so sad that people have to use people. But again, I am glad that I have the maturity and sense to see right through these sorts of people.

START FOR THE RIGHT REASONS, NOT TO GET FREE PRODUCTS
I want to touch on the regular question I get asked and that is when people tell me they want to start a blog to get free stuff. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DO NOT START A BLOG FOR THIS REASON. Companies have limited samples that they will send out to bloggers and they will see right through bloggers who are only blogging for free products. You will also struggle to keep up blogging if your intention is to blog for free products because blogging is so time consuming. So, please start blogging because you enjoy writing in depth about products and your life rather than to get products for free. I personally started blogging because it interested me as a hobby. It took me almost 5 months for companies to start contacting me and I would say I reject 50% of companies because they are not of relevance or I do not think I would like the products they are offering. I only accept products that I think would be of benefit to you guys. I know bloggers who have been blogging for years and they have not received a single product from a company but they continue to blog after years because it is their hobby and I really respect them for this.

PR COMPANIES

I know that their are many blogging brands such as Influenster that make you have so many requirements so that you can get free samples. From what I know, you sign up to these companies and then you apply for campaigns based on certain requirements and then you apply for samples. I will not criticise these sort of companies because I have never worked with them so I do not know how they operate but I know from chatting with other bloggers who have previously worked with them, that they are quite demanding. However, if this works for you and you are happy to associate yourself with them and that is great!!

When companies approach me, some of them are honestly so lovely and are genuinely interested in my blog. I tend to favour these companies more because I know that they are more sincere and are genuinely wanting to send me products because they like my blog and then they will hope I will consider it for a review or even an Instagram post. I feature roughly 70-80% of products I get sent directly on Instagram to say 'thank you' to the company. I then test out the products and then the ones that I feel I have enjoyed and I think a review will be of benefit to my readers I will feature in a blog post. However, some companies approach me stating they want to send me products in an exchange for a review. I tend to decline these offers because it is quite forceful and they seem to lack interest and are only interested in promotion. I think this situation is comparable to the PR companies like influenster because they demand that you must promote them in a blog post. If a company approaches me in this manner, I tend to respond and say that I will happily promote the products IF I like the product. I only promote brands that I truly think will be of interest to you guys and also if I enjoyed it myself. If you want to read my disclaimer then please do so and also if you are a company and wish to collaborate with me then please check out my PR contact page.
I am sure that many other bloggers have experienced the stress that comes with blogging and also the envious people too, but I am trying to deal with it in a mature manner and to avoid them in my life.
'SO PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO PEOPLE WHO DO NOT CLAP WHEN YOU WIN.'
I promise I will have a more positive blog post to follow haha. Thank you to those of you who have continued to support me. I love and appreciate you all.

  1. Hello my dear. Wow, for such a young age you speak the world of sense and maturity. I am very glad to read this because there are so many bloggers now who do blogs for free products and they all fail. You have done so well for yourself and everyone loves your effort and dedication. You are right about the brands, I worked with ETailPR and they were shockingly bad, they made you have the companies logo on your blog and have promo banners on the side of the company you were working with and I lost so many viewers because everyone hates those sorts of people. I decided to start a fresh and make a new blog and I have been at my new blog for one year because I have done posts because I love it as a hobby. you are so intelligent and you will go far in this industry my friend, congratulations. Love Desiree xx

Right from the horses mouth, this post cant get any more accurate. Like you I cannot comment on the companies like Influenster and ETailPR because I also have chose not to work with them but from what I have heard when you work with these companies you are basically allowing your blog to become unsuccessful, that's my opinion. Congrats on your blog, you are doing so successful and as for the jelly bitches? THEY ARE JEL. You are doing so much better than all of them and that why they are jealous. Aint it sad that people cant be happy for successful people. Keep up the good work and keep giving people reasons to be jealous haha. Good work XD

  4. This was really insightful and I don't even blog professionally just for fun and I already understand how much time it takes. I am a full-time grad student and I work full-time so it limits my blogging dramatically. I also see a lot of sites where I can review free samples and things but I just don't really want to be forced to try products and forced to meet deadlines especially with this just being something I like to do. I definitely think serious blogging is a full-time job.

  7. Gosh you have hit the nail on the head with so many points here, especially about jealousy in blogging. I started my blog nearly 5 years ago so was there before the whole blogging for freebies thing started and I've seen as massive shift as the years have gone on. People used to be happy for one another and sadly this is decreasing day by day too xxx

  9. Love this! I love what you said about how time consuming blogging can be, blogging is my hobby and I struggle with managing time for it since grad school is my first priority. Also the "jealous" part reminds me of a few gals...but I must not dwell on the past! You hit some swell points girl!

  10. The amount of times someone has said to me something like "So you blog to advertise companies products and then get paid with free stuff?" "Er, no! I blog because I love to write and share products some products THAT I LIKE - you dick!" Sorry rant over. You made some very relatable points here Kirsty ^_^
